Quinobequin Quilters
2007/8 Block of the Month
Starry, Starry Night
Previous BOM's:
2004/5
2005/6
2006/7
These "Star Player" blocks were exchanged at the December meeting.
In this year's block of the month we will try different star patterns and different techniques ranging from multiple stars per block to paper piecing to traditional star patterns.  All blocks will be 12 1/2 inches unfinished and will use a black (or black tone on tone) background to make those stars sparkle!

Each month participants will piece two blocks, one to keep and the other to exchange at the guild meeting with fellow guild members who brought their star block for the month.  By May you will have a galaxy of stars to use in one big quilt or a few smaller ones!

The month listed is the month the block is due.

September:
Friendship star 4-patch (see newsletter for instructions or go
             to
quilting.about.com/od/blockofthemonth/ss/friend_star_2.htm and
follow the directions for the 6-inch star).  Put four 6-inch stars
together to make a 12-inch block
October:
Something Borrowed (www.blockcentral.com/bom2006-2.shtml)
REMEMBER: Your background should be BLACK, not cream, as
the pattern lists.  All other colors are up to you!
November:
9-patch Star (www.caroldoak.com/pdfs/9PatchStarBlock.pdf)
This is a paper-pieced block, so print the first two pages at full size.
Before sewing, verify the 3 patterns for the center, corners and sides
of the 9-patch are all 4 inch squares without the seam allowances.
For those who haven't paper pieced before, here is a link to some
clearly illustrated instructions to help you learn the technique:

December:  Star Player (www.blockcentral.com/bom2006-11.shtml)

the pattern lists.  All other colors are up to you!
January:
Glitter, Glitter (www.mccallsquilting.com/qb/pattern_999_2)
The background (color #1) should be BLACK.  You choose the
             other colors.
February:
Sawtooth Star 4-patch
             (www.quilt.com/BlockOfTheMonth/1997/SawtoothStar.html)
Put four 6-inch stars together to make a 12 inch block.  Yes, this is
very similar to last month's block, but the black background
surrounding each star will make them pop for a different look.
March:
Goshen Star
              (
www.quilt.com/BlockOfTheMonth/19981999/GoshenStar.html)
Remember to use a black background.
April:
Green Mountain Star
          (
www.quilt.com/BlockOfTheMonth/19981999/GreenMountainStar.html)
Remember to use bright fabrics on a black background.
May:
Annie's Choice (www.blockcentral.com/annieschoice.pdf) or if you
have trouble downloading the .pdf file try this link:

This is our last black and bright star for the year.  Now you can build
              your own galaxy!
